Presentation ICED conference: The effect of cochlear implant on employment participation

Deaf/hard-of-hearing

Poster presentation at the International Congress of the Education of the Deaf (ICED) 2025. The study investigates the impact of cochlear implantation (CI) on the labor market participation of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH).

Using a staggered difference-in-differences approach, we compare employment trends between DHH individuals who received a CI in different years (2013–2020) and those who did not undergo the procedure.

Our analysis takes administrative data from Statistics Netherlands, which includes detailed records of labor market participation for the years 1999–2022. Our population consists of individuals who were between 16 and 64 years old in 1999 and who have claimed reimbursement for hearing-related care from their insurance.
